Elizabeth Opie portrait fund.
St Agnes Museum has raised enough funds to purchase a very significant portrait by the famed "Cornish Wonder" John Opie RA (1761-1807), born in Trevellas, St Agnes.
From his humble beginnings as a mine carpenter he quickly rose to fame as an acclaimed artist alongside Reynolds, Gainsborough and Turner.
It is one of very few portraits of his family members (this is his only sister) and is a rare image of an 18th century domestic servant. She worked for the Nankivells of Rose In Vale, Mithian, St Agnes. Elizabeth encouraged her brother's love of painting from very early times, helping him with her wages to buy paints and paper to pursue his ambition.
This purchase donates £20 directly to our fund-raiser.
